RMU's ECHL Run Ends in a Flurry2010-01-25
For the first time in three years, the Colonials won't be representing the ECHL at Nationals
(Pittsburgh, PA) -- It was quite a ride, but all good things must come to an end. After going 43-1-0-2 over the past three seasons, fate caught up with the Colonials when they dropped three ECHL games in a 7-day span, effectively ending their reign at the top. After a frustrating loss last weekend to ECHL rival Niagara, the Colonials completed a week of practice needing a split with SUNY-Canton to win their fourth straight conference championship. Despite an emotional effort, the Colonials once again fell to a flurry of costly penalties and powerplay goals.
Friday's game saw the Colonials trade shots with the hometown Kangaroos but were not able to match their production in a 10-4 loss. Saturday saw a different Colonials team take the ice as they dominated at the beginning of the 1st period only to see their hosts score on several chances en route to a 4-0 1st period lead and an eventual 7-1 final. The coaching staff of RMU offers a hearty congratulations to SUNY-Canton as they represent the ECHL at the ACHA Division I National Tournament.
The Colonials will look to right the ship while hosting, then visiting, the ECHA Champion #18 Stony Brook University. With six games remaining the team will have to get back to basics in an effort to defend their ECHL Playoff Championship. The Colonials appear to be locked in 2nd place in the ECHL standings (8-3) with one final game remaining against the University of Rochester. The Colonials' current three-game losing streak marks the first time the team has lost to non-top 25 teams all season, and is their second-longest losing streak of the season (they dropped four in a row earlier in the year to #5 Liberty University).
